Born in Saint Michael, Barbados, Rihanna’s career took off upon meeting record producer Evan Rogers in 2003. Speaking of her career in 2005,
Rihanna explained in an interview that Rogers was married to a
Barbadian and they met through mutual friends. Rihanna sang to him in
his hotel room, and upon hearing her, invited Rih-Rih to sing in the
studio. Once the demo was finished, it was sent to several labels and
Def Jam jumped on it. She auditioned for Jay Z, and after being
impressed, he signed her to a deal.
Her debut album, Music of the Sun, was released Aug. 30, 2005. The first single, “Pon de Replay,” reached No. 2 on the Hot 100.
